What is a Cord? One cord equals a pile of wood 4ft x 4ft x 8ft, or 128 cubic feet. A cord of air-dried, dense hardwood (oak, hickory, maple, beech, etc.) weighs about 2 tons. Heating with Wood A cord has the heating value of 110 to 150 gallons of fuel oil, depending on the type of wood and the efficiency of your oil burner, wood stove, or fireplace.
